UNC Paths Are Faster
I receive a call from Riddler, who has a client on hold on another line:
- Riddler:
- Are normal paths any faster than UNC paths?
- HPDEB:
- Umm, nope. They’re exactly the same.
- Riddler:
- Where do you change them?
- HPDEB:
- err… the server.ini and the language files.
- Riddler:
- Which files exactly - the client wants to change them.
- HPDEB:
- Why would they want to do that?
- Riddler:
- I told them it would be faster.
- HPDEB:
- err… nope. It won’t. You don’t want them changing that.
- Riddler:
- Well, the software is running slow. It takes too long to load.
- HPDEB:
- Did they say they were having a problem with it being slow?
- Riddler:
- No, I told them it was taking too long on their machine.
- HPDEB:
- Well how long did it take?
- Riddler:
- Well I was listening when they started the server. When they clicked the button
- to when the title started, I told them it was running slowly.
- HPDEB:
- But it normally takes about 20-30 seconds, regardless of how fast the machine is. That’s normal.
- Riddler:
- Oh. So it’s not slow for them then..
- HPDEB:
- No. Everything is fine. They don’t need to change anything.
Ugh. Tell the client a: You have a problem, b: I can fix it. When they a: don’t have a problem and, b: you can’t fix it.
