3D Trumps Safety
Somehow, Riddler has managed to convince a maker of medical devices that we’re leading experts in user interface design. He’s told them that we can improve the interface for equipment that delivers focused radiation to patients. This is something that, if used incorrectly, could kill people.
So we have a meeting.
- Riddler:
- Can we build the entire UI in [our cheap rapid prototyping tool], and have it hook into their equipment? So our tool is actually running the treatment machine?
- HPDEB:
- Whoa! You mean, we re-build the entire program that they already built, in our cheap tool, and then find a way to hook it into their program? Just to provide a fancier UI?
- Riddler:
- Yes, but also, can we put 3D animations instead of 2D illustrations into the interface?
- HPDEB:
- But.. the illustrations are there to make it very clear what you are doing, and they give specific focus as to what you are changing. They work well, and are that way for a specific reason.
- Riddler:
- Well, I guess you could keep them, but I’m going to propose this 3D stuff anyways.
Sigh.
